Zidane bows out with French win

28/05/2006: Zinedine Zidane earned his 100th cap for France and played his last game in Paris as France beat Mexico 1-0 in a World Cup friendly.

Djibril Cisse provided the cross for Florent Malouda to score just before half-time in a tactical deary affair in the Stade de France.

The stadium will always hold fond memories for Zidane as it was where he scored twice in France's 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final.

Substituted before the end, the three-times World Player of the Year was strangely subdued throughout the game but received a fine reception from the crowd as he left the pitch.

"I have plenty of memories in this stadium," said Zidane.

"Everything has to end. I'll come back, as a spectator. Now we all have to focus on the two matches we have left before the World Cup. It was important to start with a win today."

With friendlies against China and Denmark in the coming days, coach Raymond Domenech was pleased with the win.

"We were not as fresh as they were physically and we suffered," he said.

"I had expected that. We worked hard tonight and this victory will give us some energy for the hard work we've got ahead of us."
