Zico quits Japan

20/04/2006: Japan coach Zico will leave the job at the end of the World Cup and possibly take up a position in Europe.

The ex-Brazil legend has been in charge of the Japanese national side since taking over from Philippe Troussier in 2002.

"I don't know what I will do after the World Cup, but I want to make clear from now that I will not continue in the position with the national team of Japan," insisted Zico.

"I will analyse my situation once the World Cup ends.

"I haven't had any negotiation or conversation with any other team or national team. I don't know where I will continue my career.

"It's not true what has been said in the Brazilian press that I have already signed a pre-contract with a European team.

"I haven't even had a conversation with any official or agent of European teams.

However Japanese FA president Saburo Kawabuchi said on Sunday: “Zico told me he wants to serve as head coach at a club in Europe after the World Cup.

He may have developed a taste for the job of coaching while in Japan."

Zico has been in Japan since joining the J-League as a player in 1991. The veteran of three World Cups himself, the Brazilian had been a technical advisor at the Kashima Antlers since retiring from the game in 1994.

Newcastle United appears to be monitoring the situation. They have been without a permanent manger since the dismissal of Graeme Souness in February and have already been told their first choice Alan Shearer is not interested in the job.
