Young World Cup fears allayed

10/04/2006: Charlton manager Alan Curbishley has moved quickly to deny reports Luke Young could miss the World Cup.

His full-back who has emerged in recent internationals as an alternative to Manchester United's Gary Neville in the back line picked up an ankle injury in a Premiership game at West Ham earlier this month.

The 26-year-old had originally told the Daily Star: "I haven't had an operation but it doesn't look good."

When asked about his likely return to training Young added: "It will probably be next season."

Curbishley, who is on the shortlist for the England manager's job after Sven Goran Eriksson leaves in July said: "We think it may be about three weeks. He may just about be back for the end of the season, which I would love him to be.

"I think he needs to be back to force the issue in the England squad. So we hope it will be only three to four weeks, but it is a disappointment for him."

Young made his debut for England against the United States as a substitute in a 2-1 win in May 2005.
