World Cup quarter finals news
26/06/2006: Day 17 of World Cup 2006 and six of the quarter-finalists are now known. Argentina, Germany, England, Portugal, Italy and Ukraine all progressed with Brazil and Spain expected to join then after Wednesday's games.
Friday June 30 sees the first tie take place when the hosts German take on the much-hyped Argentina in Berlin (kick-off 4pm). Argentina came through a tough battle against the impressive Mexico thanks to Maxi Rodriguez scoring arguably the goal of World Cup 2006 in extra-time while the hosts breezed past Sweden thanks to two early goals and Teddy Lucic's sending off.
Later the same day Italy face Ukraine in Hamburg (kick-off 8pm) with the Italians a shade lucky to be at this stage of the competition. They overcame Australia with a dubious last minute penalty while down to ten men and the game heading towards extra-time. Ukraine also needed extra-time to beat Switzerland in the dullest of all the matches in World Cup 2006. The Eastern European team finally winning 3-0 on penalties.
On Saturday July 1 at 4pm England play Portugal in Gelsenkirchen. A lifeless England squeezed past Ecuador through a David Beckham free-kick which any decent keeper would have saved with the nation still waiting to see an emphatic performance from the Three Lions. Portugal also progressed with a 1-0 victory. In a game that saw 16 bookings and four dismissals Felipe Scolari's men saw off a spirited Dutch side.
Portugal will have to do without Costinha and their best player Deco through suspension against England though Luis Figo has escaped any further punishment for his headbutt on Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel.
England could welcome back Gary Neville to the defence with the Manchester United player recovering well from his thigh injury and Steven Gerrard believes England have an excellent chance of winning the competition but thinks the team needs to improve.
He said: "We got the job done against Ecuador without playing really well. I think we will keep improving as time goes on. I think the further you go into the tournament, if you perform badly, or any worse than we are now, you could go out.
"We have got to be careful and keep trying to improve."
The final quarter-final will see either Brazil or Ghana face Spain or France in Frankfurt (kick off 8pm).
The winners of Germany v Argentina will play the winners of Italy v Ukraine on Tuesday July 4 in Dortmund while the victors in the England v Portugal game will face Brazil, Ghana, France or Spain on Wednesday July 5 in Munich.
