World Cup Fixtures

The first round of the World Cup is played on a 'round robin' basis. There are eight groups each containing four teams with six fixtures in total. Each team plays each other once with the two teams obtaining the most points going through to the next knockout stage.

If teams are level on points after the group fixtures who qualifies?
If teams finish level on points then the team with the best goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded) goes through.

…. and if they have the same goal difference?
The team who has scored the most goals in the group stage progresses.

…and if they've scored the same amount of goals?
The result of the fixture between the two sides will be the deciding factor.

…and if that game was a draw?
They'll draw bloody lots!! It happened in 1990 between Netherlands and Ireland. Ireland won the drawing of lots. The luck of the Irish.

None of this nonesense was needed in World Cup 2006 as all the teams qualified for the round of sixteen because they collected more points than the other teams. How fair is that? How boring is that?
