World Cup Blog Day 20 - West Ham

17/07/2006: West Ham have reportedly lined up a swoop for a right-back in the shape of John Pantsil, who starred for Ghana at the World Cup.

The 25-year-old defender currently plays in Israel for Hapoel Tel Aviv but is out of contract next summer so would not cost a fortune.

Meanwhile, Hammers target Pascal Chimbonda is set to be offered a new deal by Wigan in a bid to secure his future at the JJB Stadium.

The defender, whose excellent form last season saw him called up to the France World Cup squad, stunned Latics boss Paul Jewell at the end of last term when he handed in a transfer request minutes after the end of the final match against Arsenal.

Both the Hammers and Tottenham were in for the player and had bids turned down by Wigan, who insisted he would not be allowed to leave unless someone came up with the full £6m asking price.

However, such an offer has failed to materialise and Chimbonda is now thought to be pondering his future.
