World Cup beckons for Brentford ace

25/04/2006: Lloyd Owusu has received a surprise call up by Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic and could be on his way to the World Cup finals.

The Brentford striker has scored 14 goals this season and has been a virtual ever-present in Martin Allen's promotion chasing side.

A crowd favourite at Griffin Park, Owusu has played just once for his country.

Owusu is now flying to Germany to join the pre-World Cup squad before Wednesday's friendly fixture against Stuttgart.

"I found out when Mr Dujkovic phoned me on Friday and asked me to come and play in Germany," said the 29-year-old.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Reading frontman added: "I knew there was an inkling with regard to me making the Ghana squad.

"They're due to announce the World Cup squad next month and I'd heard they had been looking at me so it was just a case of keeping on working hard at my football."

Such a legend Owusu is at Brentford that Status Quo bass player John 'Rhino' Edwards penned a song about him called "Owusu The One And Only".
