World Cup 2006 Golden Boot contenders

30/06/2006: With just a few matches left in the tournament the race to be the leading goalscorer is wide open and has become one of the most gambled on aspects of this competition.

With the leading scorer having only managed four goals to date and a few more on three goals and a whole raft of footballers on two goals anything could happen.

Leading betting exchange firm have reported brisk activity on the market which is sometimes referred to as the Golden Boot.

Best Odds:

Won the past by legends such as Gerd Muller, Pele, Ronaldo and David Suker it has become a much coveted prize. Generally it goes to a player in the winning side but not always and with the scores being so low this year it could even end up going to a midfield player.

Miroslav Klose heads the list having scored four goals and the German in action today against Argentina. His much maligned team mate Lucas Podolski is close behind with three goals. Spain's Fernando Torres has also scored three but is out of the reckoning with his side being beaten by France on Tuesday.

Maxi Rodriguez who was a massive price before World Cup 2006 started is the only midfielder to have scored more than two and is joined on the list by the much talked about Ronaldo. Indeed Ronaldo heads the betting for the Golden Boot with Klose a point or so behind while another scorer of three goals Hernan Crespo also prominent in the betting.

There are plenty of candidates on two goals and a simple brace will see their price slide on the markets. Steven Gerrard has already scored two goals with his excellent record for Liverpool this season there is no reason to suggest he can not score more.

Portugal's Maniche is his country's leading contender having netted two goals while another midfielder in the goals is France's Patrick Vieira.

Don't forget about Brazil's Adriano who has quietly amassed two goals without playing well. Should he and his team hit top form then it would be no surprise to see the Inter player walk off with the title.
