World Cup 2006 Blog Day 8

05/07/2006: Germany left the competition on Tuesday evening much to the disappointment of the nation. Dortmund city centre was awash with fans and we had to walk a mile outside the centre to find a place to watch the semi-final match of World Cup 2006.

Ended up sitting on the ground to watch the game which proved a bit of an anticlimax. Met up with a disillusioned Dortmund fan who had turned up in an Everton top just to piss me off. Spent most of the game slagging of the commercialisation of football and he convinced me that it would be a bad thing if Germany won because there would be a upsurge in the interest in football and may cause ticket prices to rise. He was thinking along the right lines – football in Britain has been hijacked by the middle classes. Sadly the return of football violence may be the only way to rid the game of these idiots who will have found a new interest in a few years time.

When the Italians scored we were at the bar and it was slightly embarrassing to see my German friend leaping about in delight. It was his right to be gleeful at his nation's demise but not mine.

Drank far too much again. Germany would be a bad place for an alcoholic as there are booze opportunities everywhere and is available all night from the 24-hour garages. They even sell it in hospitals and cinemas.

Tried to explain to someone that the third-place play-off game will not be worth watching but I don't think she believed me. This game should be scrapped as it is of no interest to normal football fans.

France v Portugal and thankfully my irrational hatred of all things Portugal means I will behind Les Bleus especially considering the team is full of elder statesmen and the web designer say he is French. I may be going into Essen to watch it and doubt it will be too busy after yesterday's disappointment.

France will win and I will be getting the best price at
