World Cup 2006 Blog Day 6
03/07/2006: I didn't have much time to reflect properly on England's disappointment what with a sore head and having to write a horse racing preview which perhaps I should not have agreed to do.
Much of the rest of the day was making sure the news stories were on the site and comments were being approved. At first I didn't want to put the pro-Portugal comments on but decided it would be fairer and with most of them being unbalanced they made the Portuguese fans seem a little silly.
Germany tends to shut down on Sundays with very few shops open – apparently HGV's are not allowed on their motorways at the weekend which I thought was an interesting fact. The British government would never be so forward thinking and is too concerned with what business leaders would think. They just want to earn as much money as possible – that's all they think.
I have decided to go and watch the Germany v Italy game in a bar in Dortmund. I expect it will be pretty busy but should be fun. I don't think the Germans will be too disappointed as many never thought they would get this far. I am interested in how they react to losing.
As I am a bitter man I will not be able to stomach it too much if there is an overflow of joy should they win I intend to have a sizable bet on the host nation so I can really support them.
I think the best price available will be at
Or there are some interesting bets available at
It is great being an English speaker in Germany as many people want to improve their English and really keen to talk to me. They are keen to hear about England and the way we do things. It is also strange not knowing any of their language – I never studied at school and have made no attempt to learn any.
France are the side who have impressed me most in World Cup 2006 and I'm pleased (being an oldie myself) that their side contains players in the twilight of their careers. Experience counts for plenty in this life and youth and beauty are not always the best qualities if they are indeed qualities at all.
So, Germany to win and hammer the Italians and, of course, France to beat the Portugal team. I love the quote by Steven Gerrard when told about Cristiano Ronaldo's wink at their team bench after he succeeded in getting Wayne Rooney sent off. He said: "That just about sums up the man."

Comments on: World Cup 2006 Blog Day 6
03/07/2006: cheating Portugal team???!!! common, you can do better than that. Sorry for your disapointment
03/07/2006: Love the quote by Steven Gerrard... Well it seems that definitely sums up yourself. What would that be? Racist or pure fun of offending others? Good for you my friend. Hope on top of it and you're not religious.
03/07/2006: Uh?? and what about His Highness Lord Rooney himself?? So very English in his behaviour!
03/07/2006: don't ya love it when a shitty team loses and then blames it on "cheating" by another team... I mean c'mon man don't you think portugal would have won the game before the penalties if they had cheated, because those penalty shots looked pretty clean to me.. so don't blame a great goalie for blocking englands shots.. he's only doing his job
03/07/2006: Wayne Rooney got the results of his action is far from a gentleman.
03/07/2006: Ok...even if one doesn't like the role of Cristiano Ronaldo in that situation the fact is that Rooney DID step on Ricardo Carvalho's lower abdomen and that is ground for a red card.Sorry mate
03/07/2006: lmao a typical english man, what did you guys expect? Portugal did the world a favour by knocking them out, them and their fans. They cant take a loss they play boring football and they always find excuses to cover their failures. English are the lowest of the low and the scum of the earth and thats a fact. FiFa should ban them permnantly with immediate effect from football since they bring nothing but trouble with their mental fans and idiotic press.
03/07/2006: Typical British you have to blame someone for your failures. It was plain to see Rooney deliberately stamped on Carvalho's groin.
03/07/2006: "Germany to win and hammer the corrupt Italians"...You will eat your words when the Italians beat Germany. You should not be so quick labeling teams as "corrupt", "cheating", it shows your lack of knowledge about these things.
03/07/2006: God, what sore losers you English are... then again, you've had soooo much practice!
03/07/2006: Corrupt Italians...ever take a long look into the mirror?What a shame...
03/07/2006: English are very bad losers. If you play with more fair play and had more ability maybe you were able to win. Insulting other teams and nations will not make you play any better. You are really an idiot.
03/07/2006: Wayne Rooney. Who does he think he's impressing with all that frowning and screwing his face up. The biggest mistake Sven made was putting him in the squad in the first place. As for Ronaldo. He's only a winker!
03/07/2006: I am glad to see most of the comments here are reflecting Portugal in a positive light. The English media were obviously rooting for their home team, so, of course they will be bias. However, I expected them to be a bit more professional in covering the match. They are just being outright hostile. Calling Ronaldo 'the effeminate star' does not win you many Portuguese fans. I have respect for the English team, however boring they play football. However, I do not have any respect for their fans, as it was so aptly commented, they must blame others for their failures. Portugal did do the world a favor by knocking out England. Maybe they will wake up and see a combination of penalty shots and a good goalie do not constitute as cheating. Cheers, England, on a well deserved loss.
03/07/2006: just checked out betfair - trully amazing betting site. but does not let to bet fron USA :(
03/07/2006: Holly, holly, there is a lot of hate towards England on here. England as a nation was not on the field only a talentless team was. I don't feel bad for the English fans at all, they have seen their team play and they were useless, talentless. An African High school team would do better than what the English team did. I heard an English friend say "No suprise we lost, look who is our captain".
03/07/2006: "France to beat the cheating Portugal team." Well, you're right about france beating Portugal, but "cheating portugal team"?? Portugal played wonderfully and England lost, get over it and stop finding silly excuses about Christiano Ronaldo managing to send off Rooney, just face it: england lost. And hell to all the english sick fans.
04/07/2006: Portugal played wonderfully. From a sick english fan
04/07/2006: C'mon not all english fans are losers just the idiots who cause trouble. With all the talent the England have on their team its sad to see they couldn't put it together when it was needed. As for Portugal being cheaters thats just a poor excuse for losing. Portugal put it together when needed and their hearts were into it, that was the difference.
04/07/2006: Say all you want, If you look at the stats from the game portugal took two times as many shots, england commited twice as many fouls. It is not too hard to see who was playing dirty...Rooney not only fouled during the play terribly, but pushed another player blatantly infront of the referee after play had ceased. Either one of these is a bookable offence. The fact that you even think for a second he didn't deserve red only highlights your lack of understanding of the game not too mention how terribly biased your look at the game was.Nice try.
04/07/2006: Let's face it, skill and flair (or even a lack of it) are not always what is needed to win the world cup. I personally thought Argentina might be the winners this year after seeing their first three games, and Brazil are always favourites, but where are they now?? As for the game in question, I thought both teams had excellent chances and it could have gone either way, although as a true Brit I supported my home team without calling anyone a cheat. I actually blamed Sven for bad choices and for flunking out on his team when they needed his support the most. So please do not tar all England fans with the same brush. There are lots of us who do not do that to you, just because of one person's opinion (which this is)
04/07/2006: Ninety minutes plus, two slices of 15 min. each, with a grand finale of penalty shootout is nerve raking for any fan. Obviously on aftermath a fan rewinds and sums up what went wrong. Was it our team ? The adversary was up to the job ? Victory fair and square ? For sure any adept will stand up to his national colours, but if you do, please make it with honor, decency, mental state and PRIDE your representatives didn't show on the field. Congratulations to the final four and may the best TEAM(!) win...bring another round !!!
04/07/2006: I agree with those comments, the Portugal team played very well (but we will beat them I hope). And the English team was not skilled, during their play I was hoping to meet Portugal because I want my team to qualify itself by the most spectacular way. But, of course finishing a game like that with penalties is a 50 per cent lucky qualification. So every losers will say it''s not fair. But what matters for me is that no one will say the French team doesn''t deserve the supreme victory, because we are meeting some of the best teams of world.I hope we will get our 2nd World Cup for ZZ by the best way. For his arrival into The Legend of Football. But this is not done yet, we have to overcome Portugal.
04/07/2006: Yes all very well and good luck France I say. At least they have a colourful team. And how about a bigger quota for Africa? Or do we have to wait some decades to give fair representation to a huge continent with many wonderful entertaining and POPULAR teams?
05/07/2006: This crazy man, pekerman, lost the unloseable game against Germany on his very big defensive policy having scored only one goal and with no guarantee. We were very much eager to see that the Argentines picked up the World Cup copa but great crespo, riquelme and messi even you don't play the final game.
06/07/2006: Africa is doing is it through Viera, Zidane, Miguel, Henry, and the others of the kind!!Our ambasadors are almost everywhere.I hope we'll do better in South Africa!!Cheers.
