World Cup 2006 Blog Day 17

14/07/2006: Real Madrid are reportedly closing in on the signing of World Cup 2006 star Ruud van Nistelrooy whose future has yet to be resolved.

The future of van Nistelrooy has been under much scrutiny ever since he was left out of the Carling Cup final team that faced Wigan.

The 30-year-old then spent a large part of the remainder of the season on the bench before he was sensationally sent home before the final game of the season against Charlton.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has since said that the Holland hit-man will be returning to the club for pre-season training but Real, Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven have made their interest known in the player.

Now reports from Spain are suggesting that van Nistelrooy has agreed personal terms with the Bernabeu outfit although Real still have to submit a suitable offer with the Reds to complete the capture.

New president Ramon Calderon is desperate to bring in some high-profile names after his election promises and the Old Trafford star, along with Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro are said to top Fabio Capello's wish list.
