World Cup 2006 Blog Day 14
11/07/2006: There is a certain sadness about Germany now World Cup 2006 has finished. Radio programmes talked of the emptiness and people's emotions are all over the place.
Spent the day with a wonderful girl who, if I was ten years younger, able to speak German and not such an idiot I could easily fall in love with.
Went to see some industrial culture in Duisberg - a huge old iron ore plant. I doubt it would pass any health and safety laws in England but here you could wander around all the various parts and climb to the top of the main stucture.
Back to Essen to see the the house where the 19th century steel magnate Alfred Krupp lived. It was on a par with the best country houses in England but we were the only visitors - though that might have been because we only arrived ten minutes before it shut.
Finished off by a visit to a massive lake built in the height of National Socialism. The best day of the visit so far and there was no football.

11/07/2006: FIFA!?!?!Can you believe that FIFA ordered the axing of the Stadium Announcer in Berlin, for breaching their strict neutrality rules. His offending statement was “ladies and gentleman, our team needs our support”, prior to their quarter final clash against Argentina, which was apparently enough to remove him. You've got to be kidding me!Apparently the announcer had been there as the announcer for years, and overcome with excitement at such an important match for the HOST country, HIS country, FIFA had him removed. Har far will FIFA go with their ridiculous policies, you already get booked for over celebrating a goal.I'm sure everyone noticed this year that they turn an apparent blind-eye to poor refereeing and cheating though, even slurs against other players and their families.
12/07/2006: For someone who doesn't really like football I find it hard to believe I am going cold Turkey!Although I do love watching Germany play and the fact it was all held in Germany made it all the more special.I am glad Germany got a place even if it was 3rd.They played like real gents as always and were a shining example to all the other teams.Jurgen If you are reading this please don't leave as coach you were a damn good footy player in your time and you are a fine coach and they guys love and respect you. - Don't go!Roll on the next World Cup - I can't wait!
