World Cup 2006 Blog Day 1

28/06/2006: Ok. I've made it to Germany from where I will update this World Cup blog and edit this website. Very nearly never made it thanks to being stopped by the police on leaving Leeds Airport. They were asking all sorts of questions and I didn't help my cause by being stoned and leaving my bag at the screening area. I got the feeling that if I hadn't explained about the website then I would not be here now.

After checking my passport for about five minutes and asking their questions I was pulled into an interrogation room where I was asked what I sold on the website. "Very little at the moment," I thought to myself. What business was it of theirs? I should have said Nazi memorabilia, skinhead regalia and that I promote football violence. As soon as I mentioned ringtones he let me go possibly thinking 'well no-one buys ringtones anymore they Bluetooth them don't they?'

Caught the last part of the Brazil Ghana game in the airport lounge but at 2-0 the game had lost its interest. Spoke to a German fan later who had watched the game at a public viewing in Dortmund. She said that most of the crowd started supporting Brazil but as the game went on and Brazil slipped back into their /boring style the mood at the viewing changed and everyone got behind Ghana – even those people who turned up in Brazil shirts.

She had bought me an England flag which she had draped on the passenger seat. I've never owned a flag in my life before and am not sure what to do with it. Can't see myself draped in it and surely it'll be a pain to carry around. I've never even worn a Liverpool scarf. No colours.

Heard a tale about a German football fan which sounds very unjust. Arrested as part of a German police 'setting an example' exercise, he was kept in jail overnight, has been banned from attending any World Cup games despite having tickets. The poor lad has to report to the police station every day and cannot go to any of the public viewing of matches. He had done nothing wrong and was just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not only that he now has a criminal record. He's got himself a lawyer but nothing is going to be sorted out until after the tournament.

We caught the end of the France Spain game in an American theme restaurant in Essen. Plenty of big plasma screens. They offered a World Cup 2006 menu with a dish for every country in the tournament except England! My friend ordered the German dish which, to me, just looked like Sausage and chips with tomato sauce on.

Didn't mind the French winning as they can play good football. Spain threw it away once again. It's ironic they have been knocked out for beating Ukraine 4-0 in their first game. Two days without football, god knows what I'm going to do. Still two days until Germany v Argentina and three days until England v Portugal

Comments on: World Cup 2006 Blog Day 1

28/06/2006: No offence to the Brazilians, but I honestly think the referee at the Ghana game was not only biased but racist....I have a feeling African countries should just boycott the World cup...same thing happened in the Ivory Coast and Netherlands game!

28/06/2006: very true!

28/06/2006: I agree, referees and commentators all have a negative view on anything to do with african countries.

28/06/2006: What a load of nonsense. Ghana's back four didn't stand a chance against Brazil's strikers. End of story.

28/06/2006: GO ENGLANDfrom saumu axmed

28/06/2006: Not just refs being biased or racist but how about just plain rubbish. How many dive''s have been over looked, the Italians are just cheats!! even the supposedly honourable Thierry Henry is in on it.

28/06/2006: Brazil deserved to win, but i think that people in general are prejudiced even if it is subconscious... even just based on the fact that they look different. Chances are the ref has never had anything to do with African people.

28/06/2006: Stoned at the airport is not the smartest thing to do. I thought the Portugal game was a combat scoccer. Go England.

28/06/2006: Definitely seems to be distinctly advantageous to be from Europe and South America! I'm thinking that Brazil-Ghana match was much closer than it appears by the score.

28/06/2006: Referee's are biased against any that aren't considered "Heavyweight's" of the game. Just look at the Australia vs Italy Game. The longer that game went on the less Italy looked like winning, but then after a bigger dive than you've ever seen they get a penalty in the box in the last five seconds. THE REF WAS STANDING FIVE METRES AWAY! The rest of the world could see that it wasn't a penalty and a dive, but not the ref. Shame FIFA Shame.

28/06/2006: As an American football official, It has become VERY obvious that there are the FIFA favoritesand the officials know who they are and officiate the matches as such. FIFA?!?

28/06/2006: What was the Australian psycho defender doing by going to ground in the area in the last minute!, chucked it away.

28/06/2006: As far as this tournament's officiating goes, one truth remains that goes for every tournament: yes, unfortunately there are racial biases. Yes, there are dives, overlooked fouls and unjust penalties. And yes, sometimes there's just bad football. But these are all elements of a game whose flow and movement demands a certain level of unpredictability. Football is just the body, the boots, the ball and ninety-ish minutes. For all the negative elements of the sport, remember that with them come the things that make football the dramatic, intense, organic and unique global spectacle we call 'The Beautiful Game'. COME ON ENGLAND! --benditlikedylan

28/06/2006: i think Italia deserved this piece of luck. They have been on the receiving end of all the bad decisions and bad luck for the last 6 major tournaments they have played. So I guess it's pay back time.

28/06/2006: Ghana totally out played Brazil. Brazil just finished off their chances and I think that is something that Ghana can develop on for the next World Cup. They get lots of opportunities they just don''t finish them off. I think we can expect a lot from them in the next tournament

29/06/2006: Ghana did outplay Brazil, and Brazil's last two goal's shouldn't have been allowed.Refs shouldn't have such a big impact on the game, but let that ebb and flow go a bit more. The players should decide by their skill and teamwork who wins a match, not the Ref.And in response to a previous comment, I would say, "Payback for who?" Australia outplayed, and outmatched Italy and didn't deserve to lose like that. I doubt their is an Australian alive who would have complained if they had been beaten fairly. Player theatrics and bad refereeing has spoiled the World Cup for an entire Country.

29/06/2006: There should be heavy cracking down on cheating Divers, I know they "say" they have, but I think they really should actually do it.

29/06/2006: Was just wondering why you were stoned heading to the airport...I think there was also some sketchy refereeing at the Italy-Australia match. I guess the Mafia made a visit with the ref before the game;)

29/06/2006: Yeah most of the ref's in the tournment are card happy, and then when you finally get one who isn't, his performance is marred by terrible decisions.Too many games have massive inconsistencies. One team is penalised for something, then five minutes later the opposite team does exactly the same thing and no foul is called.Yes, FIFA have their favourites, and they are destroying their own competition. If you are not a team from Europe (excepting Brazil) you can expect rotten refereeing and bad calls. The referee's that are corrupt and inconsistent are as bad as the cheats and divers themselves.

29/06/2006: The sad thing is, in the Australia Italy Game, as bad as the refereeing was, there has been far worse refereeing overall in the tournament. The ref in that game mad a very bad call against Italy, and an even worse one against Australia, but apart from that, his refereeing wasn't nearly as bad as others I have seen in this World Cup.

29/06/2006: I think it would be hilarious if everyone did a boycott of the World Cup. A nice big slap in FIFA's face and maybe a wake up call to clean-up their game.Only it would never work because as soon as one country announced they would boycott, then others would see that as a big advantage, and a chance for them to win with some of the heavier hitters out of the way.One can dream though.

29/06/2006: Some of the worst refereeing in this tournament, showing obvious favouritism by the refs, was indeed in both the USA vs Italy match and the Australia vs Italy Match, and after all the corruption in the Italian League.... Hmmmmmmm.....

30/06/2006: Cool. Just found out that FIFA has dismissed the refs that referee'd the first three Australian Games.

30/06/2006: 13 Players in the Italian World Cup side are under investigation for Match Fixing.
