World Cup 2006 Blog Day 15

12/07/2006: World Cup 2006 winning boss Marcello Lippi has decided to step down from his role as Italy coach, feeling now is the 'right time'.

The 58-year-old added to his already impressive coaching CV with success in Sunday's final in Berlin, as Italy lifted the World Cup for the first time in 24 years.

With his contract due to expire at the end of July, the Italian media and a number of pundits have been calling on him to sign a new deal and continue the good work with the Azzurri.

But Lippi has decided to quit whilst he's ahead and will not lead Italy into the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

The former Juventus coach revealed: "I believe that I have achieved what I set out to achieve as coach of the Italian team.

"I want to thank the federation for the confidence it had in me during the last two years of work, crowned by a result that will rest in the annals of Italian football and live on in the memory of our fans."

It is believed that this won't be the end of Lippi's coaching career, with a host of club sides believed to be keen for him to become their next boss.

Klinsmann quits as well

The German Football Federation has revealed that Jurgen Klinsmann has decided to quit his role as boss of the Germany national team.

The 41-year-old led his country to the World Cup semi-final after being heavily criticised by the German media in the run-up to the tournament.
German football chiefs had stated that they would do all they can to keep Klinsmann, after the supporters expressed their desire for the former Tottenham man to stay on.

But after two years in the job, Klinsmann has decided to call it a day and will step down with immediate effect.

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, co-president of the German Football Federation revealed: "I regret his decision, but we have to accept it."

Klinsmann's assistant Joachim Loew is the strong favourite to replace the ex-international striker, who has played down speculation that he is become the new head coach of the USA national team.

Germany's next game is a friendly against World Cup second round opponents Sweden on August 16, before they start their 2008 European Championships qualifying campaign in September.
