Wonder kids key to Korean success

02/05/2006: Former Chelsea and K-League club Pusan I-Park manager Ian Porterfield believes Manchester United star Park Ji-sung and wonder kid Park Chu-young are the key to South Korea's progression in this year's Fifa World Cup.

"Park Ji-sung could be the inspiration for the team in Germany," he said in an interview with Reuters. "He's got an incredible work ethic and energy. He makes goals, gets into the box and creates things."

"Park Chu-young is the hottest commodity in Korean football.

"The lad has immense potential and is already an outstanding player. He could be very dangerous playing a second striker role."

Park Ji-sung joined players such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at the Premiership club last summer after a successful spell at PSV Eindhoven under former South Korea coach Guus Hiddink while Park Chu-young has burst onto the scene in only in the past year for his club FC Seoul and the national side.

Porterfield believes that though unlikely to repeat their performance on home soil in the last World Cup they could still do well.

"They might not be the greatest individually but they are bloody hard to beat," he said. "Their work rate and commitment are terrific.

"They might even be the surprise package, who knows?"
