Wenger slags off Domenech

21/06/2006: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has given his backing to Thierry Henry and criticised the system of France coach Raymond Domenech.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season with the Gunners and had been expected to make a big impact at the World Cup but France have so far stuttered through Group G having drawn with both Switzerland and South Korea.

Henry, who opened his account against the Koreans on Sunday in the 1-1 draw, has taken some criticism for Les Bleus lacklustre displays but Wenger believes it is the tactics of Domenech that is the reason behind the disappointing start.

"I feel sorry for Thierry because he was left isolated as a lone striker and did not get enough support," said Wenger.

"Thierry can play that role and has done it to good effect, but if the team is not playing well and you do not get service it is impossible.

"I still believe France will go through by beating Togo but they must find the right team and formation quickly.

"They look like a team which needs confidence and to believe in themselves because they have the quality."
