Wenger fears World Cup 2006 hangover

21/07/2006: Arsene Wenger is worried that his players will not be prepared fully for their Champions League qualifier set to take place next month.

Arsenal have 15 senior players still not back in pre-season training as they have been given time off following their exertions in the World Cup 2006 finals in Germany.

They are all due back over a fortnight before the new Premiership campaign starts, but Wenger feels they might not be ready for a two-legged European encounter, starting on August 8 or 9, which the Gunners need to win to make the group stages of the competition they reached the final of last season.

He told the Sun: "I think we'll be ready for the start of the Premiership, but for the Champions League qualifier we could be short.

"Our senior World Cup players, like Thierry Henry and Jens Lehmann, will come back on August 2.

"We still have a lot of hard work to do."
