Warriors star eyes summer switch

18/05/2006: Soca Warriors star Chris Birchall is hoping a good showing in World Cup 2006 could earn him a transfer to a bigger club.

The 22-year-old, the first white man to play for Trinidad and Tobago, has been at English League One side Port Vale since joining as a trainee.

He told PA Sport: "I'm a Vale fan and a down to earth lad, but you never know what might happen if I have a good World Cup.

"I'm not going to sit here and say I'm good enough for the Championship or the bottom end of the Premiership because I've only been in the Vale team for the past two years and I still have a year on my contract.

"But, as I said, if I do well then you never know what might happen."

The Soca Warriors and Birchall face a group containing England, Sweden and Paraguay.
