Walcott England shock

08/05/2006: Sven Goran Eriksson will take the biggest gamble of his life when naming 17-year-old Theo Walcott in his 28-man provisional squad on Monday afternoon.

The youngster who has yet to make a start in the Premiership since he was bought by Arsenal from Southampton in the January transfer window only turned 17 in March.

Eriksson has had secret meetings with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who has recommended the Swede takes Walcott as cover for the crocked Wayne Rooney.

Wenger rates him as one of the most exciting - and one of the quickest - English players he has ever trained.

"If Sven calls me to ask should he take Walcott, I would not stop him doing that," said Wenger. "Theo needs games at the moment but he has something very special. It would be a gamble but he is an option."

The England manager is no stranger to selection gambles having picked Ashley Cole when the player had only appeared in 17 first-team games as well as calling up Rooney when the Manchester United forward was only 17.
