Vieira rips into team mates
20/06/2006: Patrick Vieira says France should be more concerned with their own display rather than not having a 'goal' given against South Korea.
The 1998 World Cup winners' tournament is in danger of another premature end in the group stages, as was the case four years ago in Japan and South Korea, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Koreans in Leipzig on Sunday evening.
Les Bleus dominated the game and, after Thierry Henry had put them ahead early on, Vieira looked to have added a second in the first half when his header appeared to cross the line before being pushed out by keeper Lee Woon-jae. However the officials failed to award the 'goal' and Manchester United's Ji-Sung Park levelled late on for Korea.
Despite the injustice, Vieira feels the players should not be blaming anyone else but themselves for not converting the numerous chances they created.
He said: "I am not sure if the referee's position was good enough but there is nothing we can do about it now.
"We have had things go for us on a number of occasions and now we have experienced the other side.
"The bottom line is we should have killed them off. We know that. That is why we cannot complain too much about the referee.
"If we were making chances and scoring, we wouldn't have to complain about the referee.
"We should complain about ourselves instead. When you don't score goals, you make things difficult. It is quite difficult to take and quite frustrating.
"But we have to pick ourselves up."
France now need to defeat Togo on Friday by two clear goals to be certain of progressing through to the second round.
