Viduka confirmed as captain

21/05/2006: Aussie coach Guus Hiddink has decided not to allow Craig Moore to reclaim the capatain's armband but has instead placed his trust in Mark Viduka.

The Middlesboro man captained the side through the final few qualifyers that saw the Socceroos reaching their first World Cup finals since Germany 1974.

Newcastle United defender Moore only returned to action for the last few games of the domestic campaign after enduring an injury-ravaged season following his move to the north east from an ill-fated spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

"Viduka did very well in the qualifying rounds and took his responsibility very seriously," said Hiddink.

"It is more convenient for Craig as he comes back to concentrate on getting his role in the team of 23."

Viduka said he was very pleased with the news, but expressed he had mixed emotions because of his relationship with ex-Rangers man Moore.

"Craig and I are good mates. It's a difficult situation to be in because we both enjoy leading the team," Viduka said.

"Whether it was him or myself as captain, we were going to be happy for each other.

"The main thing is we are all one team and that's how we both feel."
