United star out of tournament

13/06/2006: Serbia & Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic will take no further part in the World Cup after picking up a knee injury in training.

The 24-year-old Manchester United star sustained the knee injury during a session with the rest of the squad.

Coach Ilija Petkovic has been anxiously waiting the results of a scan, which has now revealed that he will be out of action for a few weeks.

Team doctor Aleksandar Boskovic said that the injury had damaged left knee ligaments, thus 'putting him out of play for several weeks'.

Boskovic added: "He will miss the World Cup, even if we reach the final."
