Viana keen to show talent

13/06/2006: Portugal midfielder Hugo Viana is looking to prove his doubters wrong and show his talent on the World Cup stage.

Viana moved to Newcastle United in 2002 in a £7m deal and was tipped to be the next big star at the club only to struggle for form. He was shipped out on loan to Sporting Lisbon in 2004 before being sent out again on a temporary basis to Valencia in 2005 with the Spanish giants completing a permanent deal in March for just £2m.

Viana though believes he was never given a fair crack of the whip at St James' Park.

Viana told The Sun: "I spent my time at Newcastle on the left wing and not in my natural position, so I couldn't give my best.

"But I don't blame the club. It was hard for them to play in the middle because Gary Speed did very well in that position.

"It was difficult for the manager so he used me on the left wing.

"Because I couldn't play in my best position it hit my confidence and the way I played on the left. I got down."
