Brazil - Fixtures
30/03/2006
Brazil v Croatia Berlin Tuesday June 13 8:00pm
World Cup Odds:
Berlin's Olympic Stadium will host the final of the 2006 World Cup. Built between 1934-1936 it staged the 1936 Olympic Games - famous for Jesse Owens winning four gold medals. The black athlete's success upset Germany's then leader Adolph Hitler who yearned to create a superior Arian race - of white people! The stadium was renovated in 2000 with the work taking four years to complete. Today, it is on of the most modern stadium in Europe with its floodlighting and acoustics state of the art. The ground hosts Germany's annual Cup Final. It is famous for it's unique blue athletics track. Its 75,000 capacity makes it the second biggest stadium in Germany. Hertha Berlin play their home games at the Olympiastadion.
World Cup matches in Berlin -
The stadium will host three games in the group stages. On June 13 the reigning World Champions Brazil take on Croatia at 9pm local time. Just two days later Sweden and Paraguay (in England's group) face each other in the second of their group games. On Tuesday June 20 host nation Germany will play South American challengers Ecuador. Being the final game in the group this could be an exciting encounter with both teams probably needing a win to progress to the next stage. The outcome of the match could decide who Endland play in the next stage. On current form it could be the host's last game in the tournament - but not a final at the Olympic stadium that the whole of the country craves.
There are no games at the stadium in the last 16 phase of the competition but the ground stages a quarter-final tie on June 30 before staging the final on July 9.

Although known as the Allianz Arena, the stadium will be known as the FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich during the World Cup as Fifa does not allow stadium sponsorship. It's distinctive shape led to the ground being nicknamed Schlauchboot (inflatable raft) by the locals of Munich. Two Buderliga teams play at the stadium FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München. Built at a cost £286 million the stadium holds 70,000 people. It was completed in 2005 and replaced Munich's Olympic Stadium. Panels in the roof were made so they can change colour depending on which team is playing and can be covered over to provide protection from the sun. The first goal, in a competitive match, was scored by the England midfielder Owen Hargreaves. The old Olympic Stadium was the venue for the 1974 World Cup final where West Germany beat Holland 2-1 in the final.
World Cup matches in Munich -
The Munich Stadium will host the opening game in the 2006 World Cup on June 9 when hosts Germany take on Costa Rica. On June 14 African qualifiers Tunisia play Saudi Arabia in their opening games. The colourful Brazilian fans will see their team take on the Socceroos from Australia on Sunday June 18. On June 21 Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) will face their easiest game when taking on Serbia and Montenegro having already faced Argentina and the Netherlands (Holland) in their earlier games.
On June 24 the stadium will host a game in phase two of the tournament - possibly Germany and possibly England. On July 5 ticket holders for one of the semi-finals will need to be in Munich to watch the second of ties - the other semi-final being played in Dortmund.
Brazil v Japan Dortmund Thursday June 22 8:00pm
Named after the former Prussian province of Westphalia Signal Iduna Park is home to Borussia Dortmund and will host five games in the 2006 World Cup. It is Germany's biggest stadium holding nearly 82,000 fans but due to Fifa regulations can only hold 67,000 in the World Cup as no standing is allowed. Built in time for the 1974 World Cup, the Westfalenstadion hosted 3 Group games and 1 Final Group game. It was originally built to hold 54,000 spectators. The ground was expanded in the 1990's and when the final work was completed four years ago the city of Dortmund had the biggest ground in Germany. Borussia Dortmund has the highest average attendance of any soccer club in Western Europe with an average of nearly 80,000 paying spectators for every game. The unique "Südtribüne" with more than 25,000 standing fans, makes this stadium one of the most breathtaking football stadiums in the world. It can be converted from standing places and seats within two days.
