Van Nistelrooy set for Dutch axe

23/06/2006: Ruud van Nistelrooy could be ped for Holland's last 16 tie with Portugal after receiving criticism from coach Marco van Basten.

The Manchester United hitman has yet to fire on all cylinders in the World Cup finals, scoring just one goal in the 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, and van Basten feels his contribution to their games has not been up to scratch.

Van Nistelrooy went into the tournament having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and had an end-of-season bust-up with boss Sir Alex Ferguson, leaving his future at the club in doubt which could explain his patchy form.

As a result van Basten has hinted that the player could be replaced by Dirk Kuyt in the central striker's position in the game against the Portuguese in Nuremburg on Sunday.

He said: "I expect more from a player of his standard. Ruud is training well but I just feel he needs to show a little bit more.

"The central position up front is a point of discussion and the chance that Dirk will start on Sunday has increased."
