Van Bommel fires Dutch warning

17/06/2006: Holland midfielder Mark van Bommel has admitted his side need to improve if they are to make a real impact in World Cup 2006.

The Dutch progressed to the second round of the tournament after a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on Friday but were far from at their best, particularly in the second half.

First-half strikes from Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy appeared to have put Marco van Basten's men in complete control in Stuttgart but Ivory Coast rallied after the break and got back into the game when Bakari Kone struck and, despite their progression, van Bommel knows his country need to do better if they are to go further in Germany.

He said: "Until leading 2-0 we had played well, then we lost it. We played badly but we have to learn from it. Ivory Coast were strong opponents. They were always dangerous."

Boss van Basten, however, was pleased with his side's spirit in the 2-1 victory as they now prepare to take on in-form Argentina in their final group game.

"We started very well but after that it became difficult. In the second half we could only defend," he admitted. "It was a very difficult match because Ivory Coast have a very good team, but I must pay a compliment to my players because they fought right to the end.

"We'll take it step by step. We'll see how it goes against Argentina next."
