Van Basten hails Argentina defence

22/06/2006: Marco van Basten has praised Argentina following the goalless draw in Frankfurt and now predicts a tough battle against Portugal.

Holland had the chance to top Group C on Wednesday night but were unable to break the Argentinians down and had to settle for a point, which meant Jose Pekerman's side went through as winners of the group.

The Dutch tactician made several changes to his starting line-up to protect the stars who were on yellow cards but conceded that his team found it very tough to open up Argentina's defence.

"Argentina are masters in defence," he added. "We weren't fast enough to switch into the attack and then it is hard to find the gaps.

"Only towards the end did we create some half chances."

Holland now face Portugal in the second round, while Argentina face Group D runners-up Mexico. Van Basten feels it will be a very tight match and has got his players to practice penalties.

"They are an excellent team but we are not too bad either. I think it is time to start experimenting with some penalties," he added.
