Van Basten confident of Ruud ability

14/06/2006: Marco van Basten insists striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will fire Holland to success despite his poor display against Serbia & Montenegro.

The Manchester United star barely featured in their opening Group C clash as Arjen Robben took all the plaudits and scored the decisive goal in the slender 1-0 victory.

Van Nistelrooy's future at Old Trafford is very much up in the air at the moment, with Bayern Munich the latest club to be linked with a move although there have also been rumours that he has patched up his differences with Sir Alex Ferguson and is set to continue his stay with United.

Van Basten is adamant that the constant speculation over his future is not causing a distraction and van Nistelrooy will soon rediscover his goal-scoring touch.

Van Basten said: "I have not discussed anything with Ruud.

"He did not play well on Sunday but these things happen.

"I played a lot of games at a very high level. Sometimes you play badly, sometimes you play well. There is nothing unusual in that.

"I still have total confidence in his ability."
