Van Basten blasts ref

26/06/2006: Holland coach Marco van Basten was disappointed with his side's inability to equalise against Portugal and also blasted the referee.

In a stormy last 16 encounter in Nuremberg, Portugal ran out 1-0 winners to send the Oranje crashing out but it was the performance of the referee Valentin Ivanov, as well as that of his side, that was criticised by van Basten.

Nuno Maniche ended up scoring the decisive goal in the game but many fans afterwards were talking about Ivanov's decision to send off four players and hand out 16 yellow cards during the 90 minutes.

Despite twice having a man extra, Holland were unable to make their advantage count as Dirk Kuyt and Rafael van der Vaart were both guilty of missing good chances late on.

Reflecting on the game van Basten said: "It is a pity the referee made a mess of this game. It was an open game and very spectacular but we could not score a goal."
