USA 1 Ghana 2

22/06/2006: Ghana secured their place in the last 16 with a controversial 2-1 victory over USA in the Group E clash in Nuremberg.

The decisive moment came in first-half stoppage time after the US had just equalised.

Referee Markus Merk ruled a foul in the area by Oguchi Onyewu on Razak Pimpong, but there was only minimal contact which led to Stephen Appiah's match-winning penalty.

The game started quietly, although German referee Merk continued his fussy tournament by brandishing the yellow card twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Ghana took the lead midway through the first half when Haminu Dramani dispossessed Claudio Reyna near his own area, before his pace took him clear. He then calmly shifted it onto his right foot before expertly curling a shot past Kasey Keller.

Reyna sustained a knee injury in that challenge which forced his withdrawal later on.

The US levelled two minutes before half-time when DaMarcus Beasley sent in a great low ball behind the Ghanaian defence and Clint Dempsey met the ball at pace to lash an unstoppable shot home.

But the half ended in controversy after Merk awarded the softest of penalties for the challenge by Onyewu as he jumped with Pimpong.

Appiah was not in a mood to debate it as he slammed the penalty into the top left corner, with Keller going the wrong way.

The US almost equalised 20 minutes into the second stanza after neat work by Eddie Lewis down the left saw Brian McBride dive in at the near post, only to see his header bounce back off the upright.

But that was as close as Bruce Arena's side came to equalising despite the introduction of Eddie Johnson providing much-needed impetus.

So Ghana go on to most likely face Brazil in the second round, where they will be without Michael Essien who picked up his second yellow card of the tournament.
