United States lose Gibbs to injury

26/05/2006: United States defender Cory Gibbs will not being going to Germany after sustaining a knee injury in his side's 1-0 defeat to Morocco on Tuesday.

Coach Bruce Arena has replaced Gibbs with German-based full-back Greg Berhalter.

"Naturally, we are very sorry for Cory," Arena said

"We know he was looking forward to playing in his first World Cup. I believe strongly in him as a player, we are going to miss him."

Cory Gibbs had recently signed a pre-contract agreement with Charlton having been playing his football last season for Feyenoord.

Berhalter was a member of the US squad at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan and played 44 times for his country. Last season he captained Energie Cottbus as they gained promotion to the Bundesliga.

The injury is a second blow to Arena who had already been forced to replace Frankie Hejduk with Chris Albright just one day after he named his original squad.
