United States final squad named

03/05/2006: Bruce Arena has become the first World Cup coach to name his final squad for the summer showpiece in Germany in June.

The longest-serving coach from the 32 who will lead their squad made only a couple of surprise choices made on Tuesday with the omission of MSL 2005 Player of the Year Taylor Twellman the notable.

"This has been a long process....and it was very difficult," Arena said.

"There's not a rule of thumb on how any of these selections were made. Some were hunches, others were potential, others were, 'We have till June 12th and we think we can turn this player around.' "

It is a very experienced squad with 12 of the roster having played in previous World Cup tournaments. Fulham's Brian McBride will be going to his third finals along with both Eddie Pope and Frankie Hejduk.

Twelve of the squad play in Europe with the rest playing their football in the MSL.

Goalkeepers: Marcus Hahnemann (Reading), Tim Howard (Manchester United), Kasey Keller (Borussia Moenchengladbach).

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Cory Gibbs (ADO Den Haag), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Eddie Lewis (Leeds United), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege), Eddie Pope (Real Salt Lake).

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven), Bobby Convey (Reading), Clint Dempsey (New England Revolution), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids), John O'Brien (Chivas USA), Ben Olsen (D.C. United), Claudio Reyna (capt) (Manchester City).

Forwards: Eddie Johnson (Kansas City Wizards), Brian McBride (Fulham), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Josh Wolff (Kansas City Wizards).

Bruce Arena has named 13 reserves that will come into the squad in case of any injuries.

Goalkeepers: Tony Meola (New York Red Bulls), Matt Reis (New England Revolution)

Defenders: Chris Albright (Los Angeles Galaxy), Gregg Berhalter (Energie Cottbus), Todd Dunivant (Los Angeles Galaxy).

Midfielders: Chris Armas (Chicago Fire), Chris Klein (Real Salt Lake), Pat Noonan (New England Revolution), Steve Ralston (New England Revolution), Kerry Zavagnin (Kansas City Wizards).

Forwards: Conor Casey (FSV Mainz), Chris Rolfe (Chicago Fire), Taylor Twellman (New England Revolution).
