Tunisia 0 Ukraine 1

Best match odds at:

23/06/2006: A penalty from Andriy Shevchenko in the second half secured Ukraine a place in the last-16 of the World Cup thanks to a 1-0 win over 10-man Tunisia.

The goal was the only bright spot in a disappointing final Group H clash in Berlin in which neither side really impressed, while Tunisia's hopes of securing the win they needed to progress to the knockout stage ended when striker Ziad Jaziri was red carded on the stroke of half-time.

Ukraine will now go through to meet the winners of Group G - France, South Korea or Switzerland - in the second round on Monday evening.

Ukraine almost got off to a flying start on three minutes when Andriy Voronin took advantage of a mistake by Tunisia's Bolton defender Radhi Jaidi, but his attempted ball into Shevchenko was poor and the Africans managed to clear the danger.

However chances were few and far between as a packed midfield meant both sides cancelled each other out when looking to get an attack together.

The best chance of the half came on 22 minutes when a poor Tunisia free-kick into the Ukraine area turned into a quick break which nearly brought a goal at the other end.

Voronin picked up the ball out wide and, when his threaded ball into the Tunisian area was blocked, Anatoli Tymashuck's effort from an angle was well saved by Ali Boumnijel.

On 34 minutes Adel Chedli flashed a shot wide after poor defending by Vyacheslav Svidersky.

The main talking point came in first half injury time when Oleh Shelayev fired in a shot from distance which Boumnijel punched clear awkwardly, before the referee opted to send Jaziri off for a second yellow card after he barged in to Tymashuk in the build up.

After a poor start to the second half the Tunisians should have won a penalty on 65 minutes when Jawahar Mnari's free-kick was clearly deflected out for a corner by the raised arm of Voronin in the wall but nothing was given.

Five minutes later and it was a spot-kick at the other end which ultimately decided the outcome of the game.

Jaidi's mistake let in Shevchenko and the striker's progress was halted by Karim Haggui, who sent him tumbling inside the area. Chelsea's 30million summer signing stepped up to send Boumnijel the wrong way from the spot to put his side ahead.

Tunisian substitute Santos headed just wide in the final moments, while at the other end, Voronin turned well inside the area but fired inches wide in a lively three minutes of injury time.
