Totti vows to make amends

14/06/2006: Italy playmaker Francesco Totti has promised to make up for his disappointing performances so far in major tournaments.

The Roma star has accepted he let his country down during the 2002 World Cup when the Azzurri suffered a shock second round exit at the hands of South Korea, a game in which Totti received a red card for diving, while he received a three-match ban for spitting at Christian Poulsen of Denmark as Italy went home early again.

Italy began their campaign with a solid 2-0 win over Ghana on Monday night, with Totti pulling the strings before he was substituted just before the hour mark.

Totti, who has been passed fit for the game against the USA on Saturday after taking a knock to his knee against Ghana, has promised to do his best to make sure Italy are successful.

"I had a very disappointing World Cup in 2002 and of course everybody knows what happened in 2004," said Totti.

"I cannot apologise any more for what happened, but I can only promise to give my very best for the team and for my country.

"I want to give my country only success and we have the team to do it in Germany."

Coach Marcello Lippi has also been boosted by the news that Gennaro Gattuso is making a good recovery from his leg injury and should be fit for at least the final group game against the Czech Republic while Gianluca Zambrotta should be available for the game against USA.
