Totti close to comeback
12/04/2006: The doctor who performed surgery on Italian ace Francesco Totti has suggested the player may return to full training in a short time.
The midfielder, so crucial too Italy's World Cup hopes, injured his ankle in a game against Empoli in February.
It was first feared the Roma player would miss the finals to be held in Germany in June.
However his doctor, Professor Pierpaolo Mariani, who performed the surgery, told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "We believe that by April 20, Totti will be able to start working with the athletic trainers."
"The injury has progressed better than we had expected."
The news will be a boost not only for the Azzurri but also his club AS Roma who are still within reach of earning a Champions League place for next season.
Widely regarded as one of the finest players in the world Totti has been with Roma since 1993 and is nicknamed the Dumb Italian.
