Torres pens new deal at Atletico

20/09/2006: Fernando Torres has insisted he is delighted to have extended his contract at Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old had strongly been linked with a move away from the Vicente Calderon over the summer with a number of Europe's biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, lining up a possible transfer.

However, Torres decided to pen a new deal at Atletico, keeping him at the club until 2009 - an extra year on his current contract - and he is delighted to stay with the club that gave him the chance to make it as a footballer.

"Atletico mean a great deal to me," Torres insisted.

"They gave me my big break and I have lived through everything here, making my league debut and becoming an international player.

"I owe this club a lot and, above all, I want to give something back. I am still young and have time to win trophies and enjoy the good times.

"The offer from Atletico was more important to me than any offer I received from other clubs."

The Spain international has also played down the fact that the buy-out clause in his contract has been dramatically reduced from £60m to £40m.

"It is not important because when a player wants to leave, he leaves," Torres stated.

"Atletico had a lot of big clubs come in with a lot of money, but for me there is nothing more important than feelings.

"The summer was a difficult time. A lot of people were saying that I would leave, but the important thing is that I always said that I was going to stay.

"There are things that only Atletico fans understand, because they are different. The fans in the street asked me to stay and that was crucial."
