Toni wary of Klose battle

03/07/2006: Italy striker Luca Toni is wary of the threat posed by Germany's Miroslav Klose and warns his defence have to be on their guard.

The Azzurri have been extremely strong defensively so far in this tournament having conceded just once in five games, and that was an own goal, but they face a German side who boast the tournament's top scorer on Tuesday in the semi-finals.

Klose has five goals so far and Toni is well aware of where the danger will be coming from.

"Klose has proved how great he is as a striker not just in this World Cup but in previous tournaments," Toni said.

"He has scored so many goals and he is very strong physically and mentally. In some games he may go unnoticed for much of the game and then suddenly he finds the target as we saw against Argentina.

"I think our defenders will have to be extremely careful with him because if you give him a chance he will punish us."

Toni, who finished as Serie A's top scorer last season with 31 goals, has also discovered his goal-scoring touch with a brace against Ukraine following his failure to find the net in the first four games.

Now he is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Paolo Rossi, who also drew a blank in the group games in 1982 before firing six goals to help Italy win the trophy.

"It would be great to emulate Rossi's achievement," added Toni. "But the most important thing is that Italy advance."
