Three die in World Cup celebrations

24/06/2006: A Ghanaian man and two children were killed by speeding cars following the West African country's qualification for the latter stages of World Cup 2006.

The three died after speeding cars raced through the city of Accra as the nation celebrated being the only African nation to reach the last sixteen.

"What we have is one person dying (on Thursday). Last Saturday two people died," said police spokesman David Eklu to Reuters, who added the two killed last week were children. "They were knocked by cars that were speeding."

Eklu said police presence on the streets would be stepped up ahead of Ghana's showdown with Brazil on Tuesday to prevent at least a couple of deaths.
