Terry backs Beckham

23/06/2006: John Terry has jumped to the defence of England captain David Beckham following suggestions he should be ped for the Ecuador game.

The Chelsea central defender decided to tackle the question about Beckham at a press conference on Friday immediately after his captain had refused to discuss his own form at the World Cup finals.

Not for the first time the Real Madrid star appears to be the media and pundits' scapegoat for England's disappointing start to the tournament despite their progression to the second round as Group B winners.

There have been suggestions that the team would work better against Ecuador in Stuttgart on Sunday without him in the side and Aaron Lennon included instead, but Terry dismissed those out of hand.

He said: "I think Becks is doing very well. It really does surprise me all the talk.

"It's easy to single Becks out because of the player he is, as high profile as he is.

"Sometimes the team doesn't play well and he's the one singled out. It's not fair at all.

"He's playing very well and all the goals have come from Becks. His play and passing have been fantastic so far."
