Tenorio wants quick qualification
10/06/2006: Carlos Tenorio is confident Ecuador can progress in World Cup 2006 and want to secue qualification to the next round as quickly as possible
Tenorio grabbed the first goal aginst Poland in his country's 2-0 win over Poland at Gelsenkirchen's Veltins Arena and watched from the comfort of the bench as former Southampton player Austin Delgado scored the second.
Tenorio said: "It was a good game and the team produced an excellent performance.
"Our goal is to at least qualify for the second round and this was a step in that direction, but we have lots of work to do.
"The team has shown it can play well and that's the most important thing."
If Germany get at least a draw against Poland Ecuador will qualify with a game to spare should they beat Costa Rica in their nxt game owing to Germany's 4-2 victory over the Central American nation.
"Against Costa Rica we are playing for the second round," said Tenorio. "That game could be the crucial one.
"We have two very important games to come and it's important that we think about that instead of what happened today."
Coach Luis Fernando Suarez wants his players to keep their feet on the ground if they are not to suffer the same fate as in 2002 when they were eliminated at the first hurdle.
A meaningless win against Croatia was all they achieved then with the coach believing his side has grown up in football terms since then.
"We have taken a big step today," said Suarez. "But we must now look forward to the next challenge.
"Costa Rica will be a very important game for us and they will play a different game (to Poland). We will have to put pressure on them."
Poland defender Michal Zewlakow confessed they had been out thought by their South American group opponents.
"It was a game of mistakes and Ecuador made profit from our mistakes. We tried to get back in the game late on but we were unlucky," said Zewlakow whose team came close on a number of occasions but failed to find the net.
"Sometimes you do not always get what you deserve in football and we were unlucky. Ecuador played a smart game and we have to give them praise for that."
