Tenorio woe overshadows defeat

31/05/2006: An injury to Ecuadorian striker Carlos Tenorio overshadowed his team's 2-1 defeat to Macedonia in a World Cup friendly in Spain.
The 27-year-old scored for Ecuador in the first half to put them into an early lead but had to be withdrawn in the second half with a ruptured calf muscle.
Tenorio faces scans to see whether he will be able to play any more football this summer. His absence would be a big blow for coach Luis Fernando Suarez's World Cup ambitions.
Ecuador lost the early lead following a mistake by goalkeeper Edwin Villafuerte and went behind shortly after Carlos Tenorio's substitution.
The coach was disappointed with the performance.
"It was a strange game because we made a lot of errors in defence, an area where we are normally strong," said Suarez in a news conference.
"I hope it was just a bad day because normally it is in attack where we have problems.
"We played good football until they equalised and had plenty of chances after each of their goals but we just weren't able to take advantage.
"Still it is better that this all happened today rather than against Germany. If we make the same mistakes then there will be no way back. But I'm calm and I'm clear about the areas in which we have to improve."
Suarez couldn't hide his fears for his main striker.
"Carlos has a calf injury, but we will have to wait for the results of a scan tomorrow," he added. "I just hope and pray that he will be with us for the start of the football World Cup."
