Trinidad/Tobago - Team Profile

30/03/2006

First-time qualifiers Trinidad and Tobago look to have their work cut out to progress to the next stage of this World Cup. Qualifying by beating Bahrain in a play-off the team is made mainly of players over the age of thirty with any progression reliant on those players staying fit and sharp.

Dwight York is their most famous player having performed at the top level for both Aston Villa and most famously for Manchester United. Cajoled out of retirement he was the inspirational figure behind the team qualification and still poses a threat to any defence in the world.

In goal they have another 'oldie' with Shaka Hislop expected to start in the number one jersey though many believe Kelvin Jack of Dundee, despite struggling with a knee injury, will start in goal. Ex-Liverpool goalie Tony Warner and Clayton Ince of Coventry will battle it out for the third choice position.

Defensively they look fairly compact. Marvin Andrews is a popular player at Glasgow Rangers though he has been out of the side recently. Both Avery John and Marlon Rojas are regulars in the MSL while Dennis Lawrence, who scored the goal against Bahrain that sent the Soca Warriors through to the finals, plays for Wrexham in English Football League Two .

The mainstay of their midfield is Russell Latapy who, although 38-year-old, still plays for Falkirk in the Scottish Premier League where he is a coach. The much-travelled dreadlocked Latapy has vast experience from his time at Rangers, Hibernian, Dundee United, FC Porto, and Boavista. Winger Chris Birchall has an eye for goal and has been performing to a reasonable standard at Port Vale but after these two the midfield options seem limited.

Helping Yorke up front will be Stern John who has Premiership experience with Birmingham. He currently plays at Coventry City and is the Soca Warriors all-time leading scorer.
