Togo - Team Profile

30/03/2006

The winners of Euro 2004 (Greece) were coached by a German but it would take a leap of faith to believe German-born Otto Pfister can guide Togo to Africa's first World Cup victory.

Despite winning their group in qualifying, Togo sacked their coach Stephen Keshi after a disastrous African Cup of Nations where they failed to win a match and the coach fell out with the star player – Arsenal's recent recruit Emmanuel Adebayor.

Pfister is an experienced coach and having worked in over 17 countries in 30-year career he has not been fazed by taking over at such short notice. Adebayor is the key to the side's success – he scored in every round of qualifying and has shown he can cope with the rigours of European football in his time at Arsenal.

The squad is mainly based away from Togo with a number of players playing in Europe. Goalkeeper Kossi Agassa plays in France at Metz but mainly the squad plays in the lower French, Belgium and Italian leagues.

Born in France, Alaixys Romao was unearthed by Togo during the summer and looks to be useful addition to a weak looking midfield.

It seems unlikely Togo will progress too far in the tournament especially since the departure of Keshi and the unsettling that would have caused.

They look to have been given a decent draw with neither Switzerland or South Korea seeming as mighty as France – that said no one expected Senagal to do well last World Cup. They reached the quarter finals and beat France on the way.

17/06/2006: I hope that the poor performance of the African teams in this years world cup will stop the FIFA from continuing to allocate more and more finals spots to African nations. The simple fact is that they don't deserve any more, they have not won a game between them and they are unlikely to have any last 16 qualifiers.
