Ghana - Team Profile
30/03/2006
Ghana will be competing in their first World Cup finals and are arguably the best African nation in the tournament. Coached by the experienced international manager Ratomir Dujković, Ghana's squad is made up from top European stars and workmanlike performers from the lower leagues.
The heart of their team is Sammy Kaffour, now playing in Italy for Roma after a long and successful spell at Germany's top club Bayern Munich. Although getting on in years his experience will be vital especially seeing the group they have been landed in which contains Italy, Czech Republic and the United States.
Africa's most expensive-ever transfer Michael Essien is the driving force in midfield and although not having the best of seasons in the Premiership should still be capable of making an impression at this tournament. Alongside Essien plays their captain Stephen Appiah who has been performing well this season (and scoring) for Fenerbache. Sulley Ali Muntari is a youngster who has forced his way into the Lazio team in Italy and his energy and tricks will be vital for his team's chances.
There may be problems up front with neither Matthew Amoah of Dortmund nor Isaac Boakye of Mainz getting regular starts for their clubs. Indeed Boakye was a surprise absentee when Ratomir Dujković named his final squad and included Alex Tachie-Mensah of Swiss club St Gallen, Asamoah Gyan of Modena and Razak Pimpong of Danish team Copenhagen. Matthew Amoah has just returned from an injury he picked up in the African Cup of Nations and played his first game for his new club at the end of March having been signed from the Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem in the January transfer window.
