England - Team Profile

30/03/2006

This year under Sven-Goran Eriksson and arguably with their most complete squad ever, England have their best chance of winning the trophy since that infamous afternoon in 1966. The weight of expectation is perhaps greater than ever but with a professional preparation they can look forward to perhaps fulfilling this country's ultimate dream.

Squad Overview:

Paul Robinson, the Spurs goalkeeper, has cemented his place as England's number one with a string of solid performances which have kept in ahead of able reserve David James and the inexperienced Robert Green of Norwich.

Charlton's Luke Young, if fit, but more likely Gary Neville will fill the right sided defence slot with Ashley Cole at left back. Should Cole not be fit then Fulham's on-loan left-footer Wayne Bridge is a suitable and experienced deputy. The two centre-back positions will be filled by two from John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell. Liverpool's Jamie Carragher can fill in any of these positions if called upon owing to his impressive versatility.

Boasting one of the strongest and most feared midfields in the world England have Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, captain David Beckham and Joe Cole. All are at the peak of their game and all experienced at international level. Should any of these become injured or suspended then England can call upon the likes of Jermaine Jenas, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick or Aaron Lennon. Jamie Carragher can also play in the middle of the park if called upon. Ledley King is another two-position man being a natural centre-half but also having the ability to play the holding role in midfield though he failed to make the squad through injury. Another option is winger Stewart Downing.

Up front, Michael Owen, if fit, is the obvious choice to play alongside the brilliant Wayne Rooney who looks set to become the player of the tournament (if fit) just like he was in Euro 2004 in Portugal. Peter Crouch will be a useful substitute if needed and England may well take Jermaine Defoe to add pace to their attack if Rooney can't make it. Theo Walcott was a surprise choice as an alternative striker.

England qualified for this tournament with ease alongside Poland with their qualification only in doubt after a sloppy away defeat to Northern Ireland.

England expects.
