Croatia - Team Profile

30/03/2006

Croatia did not lose a game qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. They are tough, ruthless and most importantly hard to beat. Amassing 24 points in making their way to Germany, they beat Sweden twice and were one of the first teams to clinch a finals spot. They have quality throughout their team as well as strength in depth in their squad. Many of their squad will be hungry chasing lucrative European contracts after the World Cup and despite being in a potentially difficult group should progress to at least the quarter finals.

They have real quality in the German-based quartet Ivan Klasnic from Werder Bremen, Marko Babic who plays at Bayer Leverkusen and the Hertha Berlin pair Niko Kovac and Josip Simunic. Robert Kovac is an experienced defender who plays regularly for Juventus while two strikers familiar to the British public are Dado Prso who plays for Glasgow Rangers and Aston Villa flop Bosko Balaban.

Croatia, although only playing as an internationally recognised entity for less than 20 years finished third in the World Cup in France in 1998 where David Sukor finished the tournament's top scorer with 7 goals. They face a difficult group against Brazil, Australia and Japan.
