Switzerland 0 Ukraine 0 (0-3)

27/06/2006: Switzerland missed their first three penalties in the shoot-out with Ukraine who progressed thanks to an Oleg Gusev spot-kick after a dull game.

It was still goalless after 120 minutes of action and the closest both sides came to breaking the deadlock was when they hit the woodwork in the first half. First, Andriy Shevchenko saw a header from a free-kick crash off the bar on 21 minutes before Alexander Frei hit the post with a free-kick two minutes later.

The game never really got going in Cologne and chances were few and far between. Neither side seemed willing to risk too much going forward for fear of being punished on the counter-attack and it made for an uninspiring clash.

The second half limped into extra time and eventually penalties, with the prize on offer a meeting with Italy in Hamburg on Friday night.

Shevchenko took the first penalty but it was well saved by Pascal Zuberbuhler. However, Marco Streller, Tranquillo Barnetta and Ricardo Cabanas all missed for the Swiss, while Artem Milevskiy and Serhiy Rebrov's converted efforts gave Gusev the chance to become a national hero and he did not disappoint Ukraine's fans.

Pre-match report

Philippe Senderos is a big miss for the Swiss having been sidelined through injury, while Dmytro Chigrynskiy will miss out for Ukraine.

Centre-back Senderos dislocated his shoulder during the 2-0 win over South Korea, having scored the opener, with the injury forcing him to miss the remainder of the tournament.

The defender will be replaced by his Arsenal team-mate Johan Djourou, after the teenager impressed when coming on as a second half substitute in the final group game.

Coach Kubi Kuhn should be able to call upon striker Daniel Gygax despite a recent muscle strain.

Meanwhile defender Chigrynskiy, who is yet to start a game in the tournament, misses out for the Ukraine having picked up a thigh injury.

There are more problems for Oleg Blokhin, with defensive duo Viacheslav Sviderskiy and Andriy Rusol both suspended having picked up their second yellow cards of the World Cup in the 1-0 win over Tunisia.
