Strikers must stay hungry

23/06/2006: German coach Jurgen Klinsmann hopes his strikers can take their rich run of form from the group stage into the last 16 tie with Sweden.

The World Cup hosts have been in fine form in front of goal, scoring eight times overall in their three Group A encounters with Costa Rica, Poland and Ecuador which heralded maximum points.

Miroslav Klose, who scored twice in the 3-0 win against Ecuador on Tuesday to cement Germany's place as group winners, leads the race for the Golden Boot with four goals, while Bayern Munich's Lukas Podolski finally found the target in the same match after coming in for some criticism from the country's media.

German face Sweden in the second round and Klinsmann is now looking for his forwards to remain in form as the quality of their opponents will become increasingly more difficult.

He said: "Our strikers are in great form.

"They work a lot, but we know it will be tougher for them so score goals in the knock-out stages. We hope they stay hungry."

He added: "It has always been our goal to win the group and we're looking ahead now to the knock-out stages now that we have accomplished this goal.

"We will take it on a game-by-game basis. We hope we have a long road ahead. It was important for us to assure a top-place finish because we wanted to keep playing in the same venues."
