Steven Gerrard

02/05/2006: Steven Gerrard's importance to his club Liverpool is perhaps only rivalled by Barcelona's dependence upon their star man, Ronaldinho.

The energy and movement that "Stevie G" brings to his native city's team is obvious to anyone and Liverpool's surprise Champions League victory last season was, to a large degree, down to the inspiration provided by their captain.

And with the injury suffered by England's talismanic striker Wayne Rooney, Gerrard will now have to step up his international performances to match those he puts in for the Merseysiders.

Blessed with great awareness and immaculate technique, Gerrard was much sought after when it emerged that he was considering leaving Liverpool in the summer. But the Champions League victory seemed to make Gerrard's mind up for him and he stayed at the club he loves so much.

At 25, Gerrard is part of a golden generation of Three Lions players all reaching their peaks at the same time. Many pundits suggest that if England are to win the World Cup again, it is now or never.

Gerrard already knows a thing or two about upsetting the Germans, having scored one of the goals in his team's famous 5-1 thrashing of the German side in Munich.
