Spain 1 Saudia Arabia 0

World Cup Odds:

23/06/2006: Spain go through to the last 16 with maximum points and Group H winners despite an unconvincing performance in Kaiserslautern.

Luis Aragones sent out his second string, but they always had too much for the Saudis. It was a quiet opening to the game, but Spain started cranking up the pressure midway through the first half with Juanito and Jose Antonio Reyes posing all kinds of questions down the flanks.

Reyes delivered the ball for the only goal on 36 minutes, whipping in a beautiful free kick from the left and Juanito stole in front of his man to thunder home a header.

The goal was harsh on goalkeeper Mabrouk Zaid who had pulled off outstanding saves from David Albelda and Joaquin during the half and then another top-class effort from Antonio Lopez in the opening exchanges of the second period.

The final 45 minutes were a largely dull affair despite the introduction of Fernando Torres and Xavi.

Spain looked lethargic in defence, but Saudi Arabia didn't possess the quality to punish them. Most of their best attacks came through Mohammed Noor with Saad Al Harthi nearly benefitting late on through the midfielder's cutback, but he spooned his shot over.

An uninspiring performance then by Spain, but in truth they have done all the hard work in Group H before this match even kicked off and there is definitely more to come as they go into the last 16.
